For example 'The French Connection' is a 105 min movie and when I first ripped it it was over 17GB in size! For comparison Patton a 3hr movie is 3.3gb in size or a fairer comparison is Godfather Part II is 10.5GB in size for 3hrs. Now that I've enabled large file support I've been fighting with some massive file sizes.

The Apple TV works much better, it supports HD videos and soft subtitles and works with videos larger than 4GB which the 360 doesn't. Ok two updates to make! First up I gave up on using the 360 for the main playback device on the TV. Since the final quality is more important to me than a streamlined workflow I think I'll be sticking mostly to handbrake and hopefully by the next official release they'll add PGS support for bluray subtitles. Also I'm undecided on it's quality compared to handbrake, it seems that they both use x264 for encoding so the should be the same but it doesn't have all of the advanced features of handbrake (like greyscale encoding, better audio options, variable framerate encoding, srt offset, etc) but it's still pretty nice. Once I put Yojimbo and Sanjuro into handbrake nightly it found another audio track that RipBot never saw. Yes, I tried to play the file on WMP, VLC, iPad and Apple TV all gave me no audio.

I got weird results with audio on the last two and ended up getting no audio at all on the finished product though there was audio in the preview I made. It handled Ip Man and Crouching Tiger just fine but it did not do well with Yojimbo and Sanjuro (all 4 are highly recommended films if you haven't seen them yet). Ok I've been able to spend some time with RipBot264 over the past few days and when it works right it is much easier at handling bluray subtitles than Handbrake. I'm now making videos over 4gb so to do that and have it work you have to check 'large file size' and these large file movies will play on iOS, WMP, VLC but won't play on xbox 360, and I'm not sure about ps3. So for blu-rays using the nightly builds I set it to high profile, variable frame rate, set the constant quality to 22 and that's about it. Also the videos do work on iOS devices including subtitles. Once the video is encoded you can't play it in WMP because it doesn't work with the subtitles for some reason but VLC does, once the video starts right click on the video choose video > subtitle > Track 1.

If you get a mostly english movie with a little bit of foreign language then you'll want the 'forced subtitles' which just has the foreign language parts. Kill Vol 1 worked great and I didn't have an issue at all. Also in Crouching Tiger, Hidden dragon the subtitles were off by 12 seconds exactly so I had to add a -12000ms offset to the SRT to fix the big delay but that worked out fine. Subtitle quality can be hit or miss, I had an issue with kill bill vol 2 subtitles, I had to go and manually adjust the times but that's pretty easy. Also make sure you open the SRT files because they'll contain a little mention of the website you got it from like 'subtitles provided by delete that crap from the beginning and end. You can put a positive or negative number in the offset and it will adjust the time of the SRT file accordingly. Also run a preview to make sure the subtitles are in sync with the video, if not you can adjust by using the SRT offset on the subtitles pane. Once you get the SRT file import it into HB set it as the default subtitle and click add. and are both good sites to find SRT files. Now it doesn't pull the subtitles from the bluray unfortunately but you can add subtitles using the SRT file that you can find on the Interwebs. So far new features in HB nightly for Windows, 64bit version, variable framerate support, better support for bluray titles and support for bluray discs, better support for DTS passthrough, 2 minute previews instead of just 1 min, improved Queue and like I said better subtitles.

The latest stable build 0.9.5 doesn't work with bluray subtitles but you can download nightly builds and the latest ones work, sort of.
